Winning Project of the “Verteilerkreis Favoriten – Grätzlleben” Competition Officially Opened
As part of the official opening ceremony, the winning project of the ASFINAG design competition “Verteilerkreis Favoriten – Grätzlleben” was presented—and the winning team of students from FH Campus Wien was honored.
Green Design Meets Functionality
The aim of the competition was to develop a concept for the temporary use of the Verteilerkreis that would offer people a high-quality public space to linger and relax in this heavily frequented urban area.
The winning team—Anna Lotta Frauenberger, Berit Henseling, and Gesine Elisa Haas, all students in the Bachelor’s program Architecture – Green Building at FH Campus Wien—impressed the jury with their innovative pavilion design. Their concept combines sustainability and functionality in an outstanding way:
The pavilion is made of sustainable wood, is easy to assemble, and allows for modular use. A particularly remarkable feature is the integration of the surrounding green space—openings in the floor make it possible for grass to grow directly into the pavilion.
A Space for Flexible Use
The pavilion is cleverly divided into three areas: a workspace, a transitional zone at the entrance that connects and complements the other areas, and a communication zone. This structure creates inviting spaces for both work and relaxation and was carefully adapted to the existing site based on thorough spatial analysis.
The roof protects against overheating and highlights two integrated green spaces, giving the pavilion a natural and welcoming atmosphere.
Sustainability as a Lived Practice
“Sustainability is not just a buzzword—it’s a mindset we live and teach at FH Campus Wien. Our students are key agents of change: they develop innovative ideas, rethink the use of resources, and actively shape a livable future,” emphasized Doris Link, COO of FH Campus Wien, in her opening remarks.
The success of this student team demonstrates how expertise, creativity, and ecological awareness can come together to embody the values we stand for as a university of applied sciences.
