Study Trip to Copenhagen – Experiencing Architecture Between Innovation and Tradition

In May 2025, Master’s students from the Architecture – Green Building program at FH Campus Wien embarked on an intensive study trip to Copenhagen – a city internationally recognized as a leader in sustainable urban development and architecture.

The excursion provided not only inspiring insights into Danish approaches to urban planning and building culture but also numerous opportunities for reflection and dialogue on future-oriented architecture in a European context.

The diverse program included:

  • an in-depth architectural tour of the historic city center,
  • visits to the Danish Architecture Center (DAC) and Cobe Architects,
  • guided explorations of the innovative districts Ørestad and Nordhavn, showcasing projects by BIG, Henning Larsen Architects, and others,
  • and a one-day excursion to Malmö, including a visit to Fyrtornet – Sweden’s tallest timber office building.

The students also had the opportunity to engage directly with experts during a visit to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where sustainable design, education, and architectural thinking in Denmark were discussed.

A key focus of the trip was the direct experience of architecture at full scale: Encounters with built space, materials, and atmosphere were deepened through sketching, photography, on-site analysis, and group discussions.

The excursion strengthened both the students’ understanding of international trends in sustainable architecture and their intercultural and professional networks. Copenhagen demonstrated: architecture shapes not only cities, but also values and visions for the future.
