Addressing the climate crisis and the growing challenge of a rapidly changing world requires a strong commitment to sustainable and innovative technologies, paired with dedicated scientific research and exploration. Developing, testing, and implementing diverse solutions is vital to shaping a resilient future.

In response to these demands, the Building and Design Research Center hosted a Research Day to present projects and current findings from its key research areas: Sustainable Infrastructure, Sustainable Structural Engineering, and Sustainable Architecture.

The event featured a wide range of topics, including sustainability assessments in road construction, parametric design of structural components, and concrete 3D-printed objects. Highlights also included innovative, data-driven wooden construction systems, showcased in the new Green.Building.Lab workshop, and the challenges of designing secure and functional spaces in prisons, underlining the need for thoughtful architectural solutions in sensitive contexts. Additionally, the event presented current participatory urban planning processes in Vienna and the Hands-On Suscool Summer School, which focuses on bio-based construction materials and is set to be hosted for the first time in July 2025 at FH Campus Wien.

The Research Day concluded with a presentation of the student-led best-practice project “ReBoot”, which competed at the Concrete Canoe Regatta in Brandenburg an der Havel, followed by informal networking and discussions over a “Construction” buffet.

This open format provided an excellent opportunity for participants to critically engage with recent developments in the construction industry and fostered an active exchange of ideas between academia and practice.

The Research Day was held as part of the Campus Lectures series of FH Campus Wien, which are free and open to the public. This lecture series encourages experts and attendees to discuss societal challenges, offering a platform for exchanging insights and fostering collaboration across disciplines.
