Hands-on learning in „Mehrgeschossiger Holzbau“: Master students explore sustainable timber construction

The Master’s program Architecture – Green Building combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience — and the course Mehrgeschossiger Holzbau demonstrated this once again through excursions, expert workshops, and direct exchange with industry professionals.
Exploring sustainable building strategies in Vienna
On 12 November, our Master students embarked on an excursion focused on future-oriented, climate-resilient construction. The day provided deep insights into modular design, circular material strategies, and the use of renewable resources such as timber, straw, and clay.
Our stops included:
- ViviHouse – circular, dismantlable and experimental urban construction
- Rote Emma – rethinking social housing through timber construction and community concepts
- Fastgasse – an innovative, site-specific timber project
- ASP – hybrid timber solutions in dense urban contexts
Direct conversations with architects and construction companies offered invaluable perspectives on sustainable building practice, covering topics such as climate strategies, material selection, and digital workflows. A sincere thank you to all hosts for their time, expertise, and openness.
Workshop with Rothoblaas: Timber connections in practice
On 10 October, Rothoblaas joined us for an interactive workshop as part of Mehrgeschossiger Holzbau. Students gained practical insights into modern timber connection systems and applied these directly in hands-on exercises.
A warm thank you to René Stelzer and the Rothoblaas team for the inspiring exchange and valuable contributions.
How does timber survive outdoors? SIHGA shows us
On 29 October, SIHGA GmbH visited the course and delivered a highly practical lecture on constructive wood protection for terraces and façades. Students learned key design principles, essential do’s and don’ts, and explored real-world damage cases.
Thank you to Michael Palfi, Robert Schauer, and the SIHGA team for the informative session and the rich professional dialogue.
