From trash to treasure: The new sports bar shines in retro style!
Thanks to the project [Bau]Kasten, funded by the City of Vienna's Department MA23, our students have given recycled building materials a brand-new life.
As part of the Design/Build Hands-on course, our architecture students didn’t just design – they rolled up their sleeves, grabbed their cordless drills, and got to work. And the result speaks for itself.
The brief was clear: to design and build a bar for the future sports ground, using as many recycled building materials as possible. Much of the material came from dismantled building components, the clay used was mixed directly from the on-site excavation, and the glass blocks – sourced via Willhaben – add a cool retro vibe and create a wonderfully moody bar atmosphere when lit.
A particular highlight: the construction phase coincided with an Ö1 interview on architectural education in Austria. The students were interviewed right on the building site about their hands-on experience – a perfect opportunity to showcase how diverse, practical, and dynamic our education truly is!
