Dismantling a wooden component

Dismantling a wooden component

18.10.24

Together with the joinery Schrenk and the company Myblock, which specializes in the construction of prefabricated wet rooms (bathrooms, kitchens), a wet room was built as a mock-up last year with the students of Bachelor Architecture – Green Building in Design 6. This served as a model for the production of the wet room, which was installed in the Green Building Lab (research project “Baukasten” funded by MA 23). As the mock-up of the wet room was no longer needed, the Master Architecture – Geen Building students dismantled it together with the students from Sustainable Packaging Technology. The aim is to reinstall the dismantled parts in a Tiny House, which will be built as part of the Design|Build Hands-on course in the summer semester, and thus create a recyclable process.

During dismantling, it quickly became clear where the main problem was to be found. On the inside of the wet room, coated panels were glued to the entire surface of the wooden construction, which also covered the screw heads. Removing these panels with putty was a tedious, lengthy process, but absolutely necessary to get to the screws. An important lesson for students: Avoid bonding wherever possible. They make dismantling much more difficult and produce a lot of waste.
