BIP Week in Vienna – Designing the Kindergartens of the future together

As part of the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), fourth-semester students from the Master's program Architecture – Green Building at FH Campus Wien came together with fellow students from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Helsinki) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona) for an intensive international project week in Vienna.

Under the guiding theme “Kindergartens of the Future”, 50 students worked in interdisciplinary and internationally mixed teams to develop sustainable, climate-sensitive, and resource-conscious building concepts. The diverse groupings were intentionally formed to bring together regional perspectives and architectural traditions from across Europe.

The topics explored ranged from climate-responsive design, solar and wind strategies, rainwater management, and green building envelopes, to circular energy systems and wastewater reuse. Emphasis was placed on learning through research, collaborative teamwork, and the integration of regional characteristics and traditional construction methods, with the goal of developing innovative and practical design solutions applicable worldwide.

The week culminated in the presentation of research findings, design strategies, and planning checklists for sustainable architecture. These outcomes will not only enrich teaching at the participating universities but also contribute to the international discourse on sustainable architecture in education.

The BIP Week is part of the broader EDUcation initiative (Emerging Design Units for International Education) and is a compelling example of how international collaboration, hands-on teaching, and applied research can shape a climate-conscious and socially responsible built environment.
